Sometimes you find yourself in a special place, a special landscape, that engages you in complex, emotional, and comforting ways. Jesse’s Hideout II and the Ucross Foundation is such a place. For two weeks shortly after my retirement, I lived and worked in the composer’s studio, Jesse’s Hideout II, along the western edge of Ucross, away from its cluster of artist and writer studios. It was a time of transition.
Daily I would take walks in differing directions from the studio to be in the land along the highway and explore image-making through a pinhole lens purchased on a whim and saved for a moment of concentration. Unlike so many areas in Wyoming that are wide open, raw, barren, and wind-blown, this place is soft, intimate, enveloping, comforting, safe.
Jesse’s Hideout: Walkabout became a contemplative investigation of this time of life and personal awareness.
